Sadly Steve Bateman passed away on the 26th of April following a long battle with cancer.
Baters joined Neston in 2006 and was soon a regular in the the squash first team , prior to this he had played at a high level in div 2 at Crosby and Heswall, also representing Merseyside at county level. Latterly he played for Neston racquetball first team and was part of the 2015 league winning side, he also played a big role in establishing racquetball at Neston.
As a player and as a man Baters was Mr Reliable . On court he had a metronomic style and was a great athlete with unending stamina. Off court he was a true gentleman , always fair and kind, but firm if necessary when he had the markers pad in front of him. He made the very most of his playing abilities through frequent training, and could often be found on the glass back perfecting his style through endless solo court practices. He also had a lot of time for juniors , having a natural coaching style that helped Cameron and Ryan develop to the first team players they are today.
Baters was a true Neston stalwart, whether he was playing or not he would be there supporting us all faithfully with kinds words of positivity and a gentle smile. Is is greatly to his credit that everyone liked Steve and he liked everyone. He will be greatly missed by one and all at Neston , though I would like to think he will always be there for us shouting encouragement to the teams from the balcony."
